NEW DELHI: After a long political stand-off, the Lok Sabha saw an animated and heated discussion on the Rafale deal on Wednesday with Rahul Gandhi saying PM Narendra Modi lacks the guts to face Parliament and finance minister Arun Jaitley hitting back, accusing the Congress chief of repeatedly lying on the issue.
In a discussion where personal attacks were freely traded amid contending arguments over the deal, Rahul Gandhi opened the attack for Congress, saying it was the opposition’s right to raise questions on the deal and attacked Modi for a “staged interview” aired on Tuesday that ducked questions on Rafale.
Challenging the PM to a 20-minute one-on-one debate, Rahul said, “He does not have the guts to come to Parliament and confront questions (on Rafale) and hides in his room.” Subsequently at a press conference, Rahul reiterated the demand for a JPC probe.
Setting the case for the government, Jaitley said Rahul Gandhi has no understanding of what a combat aircraft is and said questions over Rafale’s pricing have been conclusively settled by the Supreme Court which said its conscience is satisfied that the deal is above board.
The debate, likely to be concluded on Thursday, was fractious and bitter, with Congress benches chucking paper planes, prompting Jaitley to ask whether they were flying Eurofighters — Rafale’s competitor. Proceedings finally ended abruptly after Speaker Sumitra Mahajan suspended 24 AIADMK MPs for “grave disorder” for their sloganeering over the construction of a dam on the Cauvery by Karnataka.
